Sustainability Summit

How Electric Vehicles Will Impact Both Design & Sustainability In The Built Environment

By 2028, it’s estimated that one in six new cars in Australia will be electric. How will this affect the way we design and construct our built environment and what changes will need to be made to our existing infrastructure to accommodate the shift? While the creation of charging spaces would have small effects in terms of overall land requirements, will easier charging in detached and semi-detached homes increase the appeal of these dwelling types and how will we redesign the roads, parking spaces, petrol stations and other parts of our cities that have been designed around the use of the internal combustion engine?

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this presentation, you should be able to:

  • Understand how the increase in electric cars will affect the way we design and construct our built environment.
  • Identify changes that will need to be made to our existing infrastructure.
  • Outline impacts this has on our city structures.
