Can prefab/modular fix our affordable housing crisis?

Modular and/or prefabricated buildings minimise waste and emissions and drastically reduce construction times, but it is seldom used on a major scale, especially in Australia.

Housing stock is needed now, and with a lack of skilled labourers and materials, we have to look at alternatives. In this panel we will assess the suitability for modular and prefabricated built forms in the context of our national housing crisis, and what needs to be done for it to be adopted at scale.

Learning Outcomes

By attending this presentation, you should be able to:

  • Quantify the scale of the housing crisis in Australia and identify its causes
  • Outline the benefits of modular and prefabricated homes as compared to those built using traditional techniques
  • Explain why modular and prefabricated homes represent part of the solution to Australia’s housing crisis
  • Outline steps that need to be taken to adopt houses of these types at scale
