Designing For Resilience And Disaster Planning – Why Sustainability Now Also Means Being Prepared

  •   9 October 2023

With increased extreme weather events a rather stark side effect of climate change, preparation is key to ensure our communities are resilient enough to cope with fire, flood, and everything in between.

Nationwide, natural disasters have wiped out entire lifetimes and communities. State and Federal Budgets are providing funding to be able to prepare for the inevitable, but the responsibility falls upon built environment professionals to prepare communities for what’s to come.

2022 Sustainability Summit

The questions associated with these issues will be answered in the upcoming Sustainability Summit session – Designing For Resilience and Disaster Planning – Why Sustainability Now Also Means Being Prepared.

The session will grapple with the pressing need to integrate disaster preparedness and resilience into sustainability considerations, acknowledging the escalating risk of frequent and severe natural hazards exacerbated by climate change.

The session commences with a stark recognition that the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters have made society more susceptible to profound crises. The compounding impacts of these disasters underscore the necessity for proactive measures to enhance our ability to withstand, recover, and adapt in the face of such adversities. A key objective emerges: to transform Australia into a less vulnerable nation, mitigating the potential for systemic failures and the need for extensive rebuilding post every flood, fire, or earthquake.

The panel features distinguished speakers and partners in the sustainability and disaster resilience domain. Nazli Almasirad from Etex Australia, representing Siniat, and James Davidson from JDA Co bring their expertise and insights to the discussion, alongside Kate Cotter from the Resilient Building Council, representing BlueScope, Jamileh Jahangiri from Studio Orsi, Nigel Bell from ECOdesign Architects + Consultants, and Llewellyn Regler from Network Architectural.

Together, the panellists embark on an exploration of pivotal questions: how can we embed greater resilience into our designs, enabling us to cope, recover, and adapt effectively? How can we pre-emptively plan for and mitigate the impact of the next significant disaster? The collective expertise and diverse perspectives of the panel promise to shed light on strategies and best practices to create a more resilient Australia, ready to face the challenges of an unpredictable future while upholding the principles of sustainability and preparedness.
