The View is the result of seven years of slow experimentation; a home shaped through curiosity, restraint and an ongoing commitment to making rather than replacing. Rather than pursuing a larger footprint or relying on complex systems, the project demonstrates how thoughtful interventions, careful craftsmanship and a deep connection to place can create lasting environmental value.

Working within the existing structure, every decision sought to preserve, adapt and reimagine what was already there. Spaces were reconfigured to improve the way the home functioned, while much of its furniture and detailing was designed and handcrafted on site by designer Ruby Shields and carpenter Patrick Shields. Reclaimed timber found new purpose as bespoke furniture, discarded brass plumbing offcuts became custom hardware, and vintage pieces were thoughtfully layered alongside contemporary Australian design to extend the life of existing objects while supporting local makers.

Nestled amongst the treetops of the Yarra Valley, the surrounding landscape became both the project’s greatest influence and its most important material. Openings were reworked to frame the canopy, interiors drew their palette from eucalyptus, oxidised earth and changing skies, and every room was designed to strengthen the occupants’ relationship with nature throughout the seasons.

More than a sustainable building, The View reflects a sustainable way of thinking. It values ingenuity over excess, authorship over consumption and continual refinement over constant renewal. The result is a home designed for longevity—one where careful making, thoughtful adaptation and a deep connection to place have created a home that will continue to evolve rather than be replaced.
