The BAAKA Cultural Centre demonstrates how adaptive reuse can become a catalyst for cultural renewal, environmental responsibility and community resilience. Emerging from the fire-damaged remains of the former Knox & Downs Store, the project reclaims a site of collective memory and transforms it into Wilcannia’s first dedicated cultural and tourism facility.

Rather than demolish and replace the existing structure, the project embraced the retained heritage fabric as the foundation for a new civic landmark. Significant elements of the former building were stabilised, repaired and incorporated into the new Cultural Centre, preserving embodied carbon, reducing demolition waste and maintaining a tangible connection to the stories, histories and memories embedded within the site. The retained structure is not treated as a relic of the past, but as a living framework capable of supporting new uses and future generations.
