The Medlow Bath Station and Footbridge project, funded by the NSW Government’s Safe Accessible Transport Program, is a transformative piece of place-led public architecture that addresses the complex challenge of reconnecting a community severed by a major transport corridor in a sensitive heritage context. These constraints demanded a fundamentally different approach to bridge form, construction methodology and delivery sequencing from Arenco, GHD and DesignInc.

Heritage and urban design principles underpinned the development of the built solution to minimise impacts. Carefully considered form, scale, materiality, and colour maintain visual continuity within the broader cultural landscape. The public, cultural and environmental benefits are great – the bridge replaces a high-risk at-grade crossing with a universally accessible route, prioritising pedestrian safety and social equity.

A key innovation, to bridge only the road corridor and insert a steel framed glass lift within the State-heritage listed station platform, unlocked a solution which significantly reduced visual impacts along with project cost, while also reducing material use and ongoing operational costs. Positioned atop a dramatic escarpment in the World Heritage Blue Mountains landscape, the footbridge portion of the project, which traverses a widened Great Western Highway, now forms part of the tourist journey from Medlow Bath Station to the Hydro Majestic.

Conceptually grounded in principles of ‘Design with Country’, the 36-meter span curved steel footbridge translates the local ‘phantom falls’ cloud phenomenon into a light, sweeping structure, embedding local identity in a contemporary language. The bridge rises via spiral stairs to reveal views of the Megalong Valley, clears the widened highway in a single span, then returns to ground through a ramp towards the station access that resolves gradients and desire lines into an intuitive sequence. Stainless steel mesh screens on the bridge are designed for maximum transparency, representing ephemeral cloud formations while minimising visual impact and allowing clear views.
