LCI Melbourne Workplace

The LCI Melbourne Head Office fitout represents an adaptive reuse approach that balances sustainability, functionality, and cultural respect.

The project commenced with LCI taking over an existing tenancy fitout as part of a relocation from St Kilda to the Melbourne CBD. The move was driven by a desire to provide staff with improved access to public transport, better amenities, and enhanced connectivity. Unlike LCI’s other office, purpose-built Sydney office, this project required working within the constraints of an existing space, a limited budget and rigorous sustainability targets.

A key design driver was to create a workplace that supports the human scale through spaces that feel connected, comfortable, and adaptable. This was reinforced through the integration of commissioned Indigenous artwork by Ngarrindjeri artist Emma Stenhouse. Her work informed the material palette, lighting, and colours throughout, creating a visual narrative that reflects connection to Country and celebrates cultural identity.

The design sought to minimise new construction, preserving as much of the existing fitout as possible while reconfiguring key areas to enhance collaboration and wayfinding. Approximately 50% of the furniture, 80% of ceilings and lighting, and many existing finishes were retained and repurposed. This approach reduced waste, embodied carbon, and lead times, while achieving an outcome that felt both fresh and functional.

The project exceeded its original sustainability target, achieving a 6-Star Green Star Interiors rating. It demonstrates how adaptive reuse, cultural integration, and thoughtful design can create a workplace that aligns with LCI’s values and environmental commitments, setting a benchmark for sustainable fitouts in existing buildings.
