The Maribyrnong Civic Centre and Community Hub is a benchmark civic project demonstrating measurable, whole-of-lifecycle sustainability outcomes across environmental, social and economic performance. Anchored by the adaptive reuse of the historic Town Hall, the project minimises upfront carbon while delivering a contemporary, high-performance civic facility integrated with new public realm and community infrastructure.

Selective demolition was undertaken where retrofit would not deliver comparable environmental performance, ensuring that retained elements provided genuine lifecycle benefit while enabling a high-performing new build.

The project is equally defined by its social sustainability. Inclusive design aligns with AS1428 standards, while civic and community functions are brought together to support long-term adaptability and user wellbeing. Social procurement targets were exceeded, achieving 4.37% against a 2% target, embedding measurable social value within project delivery.

Through integrated design, rigorous modelling, and measurable outcomes, the project sets a clear precedent for climate-positive civic infrastructure in Australia.
