The Alpine PassivHaus Eco Wall and Roof Structural Panel System demonstrates how building science, circular economy principles and modern methods of construction can be combined to create a regenerative building product. Manufactured in Alpine PassivHaus’ off-grid, solar-powered facility in the Snowy Mountains, the prefabricated wall and roof panels incorporate loose-fill wood fibre insulation and rigid wood fibre boards manufactured primarily from wood-processing waste and sawmill by-products. Together with the timber frame and structural components, these renewable materials create a building envelope that acts as a long-term carbon sink.
Preliminary calculations based on published Environmental Product Declarations indicate that the assembly provides a net carbon benefit of approximately 52–63 kg CO₂e per square metre, meaning more carbon is stored within the materials than is emitted during their manufacture and transport.
The system is used throughout Alpine PassivHaus projects, including bespoke architectural homes and the Eco Cabin range. Developed according to Passive House principles and validated using PHPP energy modelling and WUFI hygrothermal simulations, the panels deliver exceptional thermal performance, moisture resilience and very low operational energy demand.
The combination of an internal airtight layer and external vapour-open wood fibre insulation prevents moisture accumulation, virtually eliminating the risk of mould growth and timber decay while providing exceptional durability and longevity.
